Compare and Contrast: Hen, his Wife and the Triangle

Hello everyone!  I'm starting a new series on this blog where I compare and contrast various movies, TV shows and shorts that are similar to each other in themes and plots!

Today, I will be comparing and contrasting two Eastern European animated shorts Hen, his wife, a Russian animated short created by Igor Kovaliov and The Triangle, an Estonian animated short created by Priit Parn.

There will be some MAJOR SPOILERS in this post, so if you haven't seen either short, then I would suggest to watch those first before reading this post.

In "Hen, his Wife," the story is about a married couple, a man and his wife, who were happily married.  One day, a friend of the husband's had came by for a visit.  Everything was going smoothly, until the husband's friend reveals that the man's wife is actually a hen!  This causes the husband to turn his wife out of the house and the wife leaves the house in tears.  The husband then starts regretting his decision in running his wife out the house and starts to hallucinate. When the wife finally comes back home, she sees an unexpected surprise from the husband...

In "The Triangle," a married couple named Viktor and Julia are stuck in a routine where Julia cooks endless meals for Viktor, while Viktor remains oblivious to Julia's cooking.  One day, however, a small man named Eduardo comes out from a tiny door in the stove and he starts eating Julia's cooking. This causes Julia to start paying more attention to Eduardo and it causes Viktor to run out on Julia in tears.

As I was looking at both of these shorts, I noticed that they both have very similar themes to each other and here are some similarities between the two shorts.

1. Both shorts dealt with the topic of marriage and how both couples are either somewhat satisfied with their marriage or they were struggling with their marriage.

2.  A third party comes in and ruins the marriage between the main couple.  In "Hen, his Wife," it's the husband's friend who tells the husband that his wife is a hen and causes a strain between them.  In "The Triangle," a small man named Eduardo comes in and starts to cause friction between Julia and Viktor.

3. One of the couples leave the other once things get complicated between them.  In "Hen, his Wife," the hen wife leaves the husband after he discovers she is actually a hen.  In "The Triangle," Viktor leaves Julia as Julia and Eduardo get closer to each other.

However, the endings of both shorts are a bit different from each other.  In "Hen, his Wife," the short ends with the wife discovering that the husband is a rooster and she just runs out of the apartment in terror.  In "The Triangle," Julia and Viktor are back together after Eduardo leaves and go back to doing the same routine that they did before.

All in all, both "Hen, his Wife" and "The Triangle" were very bizarre shorts that tackled the topic of marriage and how it has its ups and downs and they are both worth checking out!
