Thursday Movie Picks #59: Femme Fatale

This week's theme is: Femme Fatale! 

Well, this week's theme is pretty interesting!  While I do watch a lot of films that feature strong female characters. I rarely watched films that has a femme fatale, so here are some movies that I considered to be femme fatale!

Oh, and here's a definitely of "femme fatale" for those of you who are curious: 

An attractive and seductive woman, especially one who is likely to cause distress or disaster to a man who becomes involved with her.

1. Get Out

A young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.

Love this movie!  Anyway, I considered Chris' girlfriend Rose to be a femme fatale as what she does in this movie towards Chris is quite nightmarish and something that really defined femme fatale in the horror movie genre! 

2. Sin City

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

 

A movie that I watched years ago and I loved it!  Anyway, there are a lot of femme fatale characters in this movie, but the one character who stood out the most was Rosario Dawson's character as she plays a prostitute who's trying to protect a town from corrupted law enforcements.

3. Batman Returns

While Batman deals with a deformed man calling himself the Penguin wreaking havoc across Gotham with the help of a cruel businessman, a female employee of the latter becomes the Catwoman with her own vendetta.

No, not the Catwoman movie starring Halle Berry, but the Catwoman movie that stars Michelle Pfeiffer.  Catwoman was quite a crazy femme fatale in this movie as she's seen playing games with Batman every chance she got!

Thursday Movie Picks #58: Movies That Confused You

This week's theme is: Movies that Confused You!

Oh my goodness! I love this week's theme!  There are so many movies that I've seen over the years that had confused me; whether it be because of how some aspects of the universe that the characters lived in aren't explained enough or how some physics within that universe works outside of that universe's structure.  Anyway, here are some movies that had confused me when I first watched them.

1. Beetlejuice

The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out.

I remembered when I first watched this movie and how confused I was with how the world of the living and the dead are able to coexist with each other, while not knowing each other's existence.  Granted, this movie is still weird to me to this very day, but it's very fun and enjoyable to watch!

2. James and the Giant Peach

An orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts befriends anthropomorphic bugs who live inside a giant peach, and they embark on a journey to New York City.

There were so many things in this movie that confused me so much when I first watched it.  First, there's the fact that a cloud rhino somehow managed to kill the main protagonist's parents, despite it being, you know, a cloud!  Then, there's this one scene where it looks like a mechanical looking shark is attacking the characters and yet, we don't know if that shark was made by somebody or the mechanical look was just a design choice for the movie.  And then, there's the fact that the characters are somehow able to breathe underwater, even though that type of cartoon logic has been around since the Looney Tunes first aired.  So, yeah, lots of things about this movie that really confused me and yet, made this movie pretty creative!

3. Spirited Away

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

This right here!  This nightmare of a character (No Face) is the sole reason why this movie confused (and terrified) me when I first watched it!  I didn't understand the basis for his character or what he was trying to bring to the movie.  We weren't given any backstory whatsoever to his character and I just had a hard time trying to understand his character, while being frightened by him at the same time!

Thursday Movie Picks #57: Oscar Edition: Best Cinematography and Visual Effects

This week's theme is: Oscar Edition: Best Cinematography and Visual Effects!

If there's one thing that I like about movies, it's the cinematography and the visual effects!  Not only do I usually love the stories being told in the movies, but I especially love the cinematography and the visual effects of the films and this week's topic, we will be exploring some movies that won Oscars for best cinematography and best visual effects!

Best Cinematography

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

I always remembered how beautiful the cinematography in this film was!  My favorite shot is probably the shot of the Hobbit getting the ring dropped on his finger!

2. Avatar

A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

 

I remembered how big this movie was when it first came out!  Not only was it visually stunning, but it also has some really good cinematography moments!

3. Mank

1930s Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane.

Even though this movie had a very slow pace, I was immediately amazed at how beautiful the cinematography in this film was!  It made me think that I was in 1930s Hollywood!

Best Visual Effects

1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit

A toon-hating detective is a cartoon rabbit's only hope to prove his innocence when he is accused of murder.

I honestly didn't know that this movie had won an Oscar and it was for "Best Visual Effects!" Honestly, it was well deserved as the visuals in this movie were fantastic!  Even though "Mary Poppins" did the animation /  live action hybrid much earlier, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was the film that really showcase the beauty of the live action / animated hybrid movies!

2. Jurassic Park

A pragmatic paleontologist visiting an almost complete theme park is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.

Oh man!  I remembered when this movie first came out and how everyone fell in love with the designs of the dinosaurs!  I have to admit that for a film that was made in 1993, the visual effects still hold up to this very day!

3. The Matrix

When a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.

I didn't even know that the Matrix won any Oscars (another film on this list that I didn't know won any Oscars).  Anyway, I think it really deserved this win!  The big thing I always remembered about this movie was how stunning the visual effects were, especially whenever Neo is performing these awesome moves whenever he's fighting against a foe!

Thursday Movie Picks #56: Natural Disaster

This week's theme is: Natural Disaster!

YAAASSS!  Now we are talking about my favorite movie genre and that's natural disasters!  I love watching movies where the characters are running away from a natural disaster and are trying to survive the disaster.  Those types of films are pretty fun to watch!  So, here are three movies that dealt with natural disasters that I've seen!

1. Twister

Bill and Jo Harding, advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce, must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.

I remembered when this movie first came out and I remembered how awed I was with the special effects of the tornado scenes.  Also, who could forget that scene where Bill and Jo went to their aunt's house to have some steak and mashed potatoes?  Mmmmm...steak and potatoes....yummy!

2. Geostorm

When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate starts to attack Earth, it's a race against the clock for its creator to uncover the real threat before a worldwide Geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.

Even though the plot of this movie was a bit thin, you have to admit that the storm sequences were awesome and it's one natural disaster film that I definitely don't mind watching over and over again!

3. Armageddon

After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas is going to impact Earth in less than a month, NASA recruits a misfit team of deep-core drillers to save the planet.

You all remembered this movie, right?  The movie where a group of astronauts go to space to stop an asteroid from hitting Earth?  Yeah, I've seen a lot of sci-fi movies where the astronauts try to stop an asteroid from destroying the Earth, but this movie is probably the most iconic out of all of them!
