Thursday Movie Picks #45: Bookish Movies

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Bookish Movies!

Now, if there's one thing that I love more than movies, it's BOOKS!  I am so happy that we are doing a theme that deals with books and I have decided to go with movies where books either play a major role in the movie or defines a character!

A prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.

Now, THIS is the movie that really got me into reading!  The whole movie might not be focused entirely on books, but the main character Belle LOVES READING BOOKS and one of my all-time favorite scenes in this movie was when the Beast was showing Belle the library and you can see Belle's happiness and wonder in this entire scene!

2. Dead Poets Society

Maverick teacher John Keating uses poetry to embolden his boarding school students to new heights of self-expression.

I know, I know.  I featured this movie before, but man, I SERIOUSLY love this movie!  The fact that the students in this movie used poetry as a way to shape their lives was really inspiring to me and that's one of the reasons why I enjoy watching this movie!

Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.

I feel like the 1990s was a GOOD time to be a book reader!  So many AWESOME movies that dealt with books came out this decade and "Matilda" was among those movies that features the main character being a BOOK READER that I really enjoyed!  Mara Wilson was fantastic as Matilda and I enjoyed every scene where she tells everyone her love for books!

  1. I'm sure I've seen all of this version of Beauty & Beast in bits and pieces when my nieces and nephew watched it but have never sat down and watched from beginning to end. I have seen the live action French version from the 40's which is wonderful.

Everyone seems to love Dead Poet's Society more than me. It was fine but once was enough.

I came to Matilda just recently after putting it off because I thought it was a kids movie. It is in a way but had much to say for older audiences.

I'm having computer issues this week so while I have three I'm relying on the Google synopsis for clarity.

The Book Club (2018)-Four friends' (Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen) lives are turned upside down when their book club tackles the infamous "50 Shades of Grey." From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, they inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter.

The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)-Quirky dog-lover Jocelyn and many-time married Bernadette decide to start a book club exclusively dedicated to Jane Austen, primarily to help distract their friend Sylvia from the fact that her husband has just dumped her. Frustrated French teacher Prudie, Sylvia's daughter Allegra and sci-fi fan Grigg join up as well.

The Pillow Book (1996)-Nagito has a fetish for calligraphy on the human body and meets ideal soul-mate Jerome, an English translator sent to Japan. However, once Nagiko's father's gay publisher rejoins the scene, the story is overtaken by treachery and bloodlust.

  3. I almost picked Beauty and the Beast!! I love that Belle is often lost in her books and she's so unapologetic about being a bookworm.

  4. Matilda is really popular this week. I've only seen parts of it. Guess I should fix that. Your other two picks are great. I'm due for a rewatch of Dead Poets Society.

  5. I love Beauty and The Beast and recall how much it broke down the typical things we would see in animated movies from her brown hair, instead of blonde, to the good looking guy being an a-hole. Wonderful in computer animation, one of the first. I still have to see the other 2 picks and Dead Poet’s Society is one I need to finally see.
