Thursday Movie Picks #62: TV Edition - Mystery

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Mystery (TV Edition)!

Oh yes!  Another topic that I'm very familiar with!  I love watching mystery themed shows on TV and there's quite a lot of awesome mystery shows out there that I wanted to showcase!  So, here are three of my favorite mystery themed shows.

Series inspired by the stories of GK Chesterton; a Catholic priest has a knack for solving mysteries in his English village.

Oh man!  This is one of my all-time favorite mystery shows!  I just loved the charm and wit of Father Brown himself and the mysteries were all very interesting to watch!  I need to find a way to watch this show without paying for another streaming service.

A female sleuth sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of Melbourne in the late 1920s, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit.

Another British mystery series that I really enjoyed and one that has a very strong and crafty female protagonist!  I just loved Miss Fisher's personality in this series and I love the way that she takes action in solving the mysteries.

3. Psych

A novice sleuth is hired by the Police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers which help solve crimes.  With the assistance of his reluctant best friend, the duo take on a series of complicated cases.

This is possibly the most hilarious mystery series I have ever seen!  Shawn and Gus are like my favorite TV buddies and the mysteries they get involved in are so exciting!

Thursday Movie Picks #61: Dream Sequences

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Dream Sequences!

Oh yes!  This is a topic that I was looking forward to!  If there's one thing that always remain surreal in movies in general, it's dream sequences!  So, this list will contain some of the WEIRDEST dream sequences that I have ever seen in movies!

1. Dumbo

Ridiculed because of his enormous ears, a young circus elephant is assisted by a mouse to achieve his full potential.

Now, while Dumbo is not one of my favorite Disney films, one scene that always stood out to me was the infamous "Pink Elephants on Parade" sequence where Dumbo starts hallucinating these pink elephants when he gets drunk (yeah, somebody got drunk in an animated Disney film for kids)!

A former San Francisco police detective juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.

Even though I haven't seen this movie yet, many people talked about the special effects used in this film and one of the most iconic scenes in this film was the nightmare sequence.  Such a deeply disturbing yet surreal looking sequence!

3. Altered States

A psycho-physiologist experiments with drugs and a sensory-deprivation tank and has visions he believes are genetic memories.

Another movie I've never seen before, but one that many people had praised for its awesome visual effects.  After looking at the religious hallucinations scene, I have to say that this is one of the most visually stunning dream sequences I have ever seen!

Thursday Movie Picks #60: Halloween Edition: School

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Halloween Edition: School!

HAPPY OCTOBER EVERYONE!  That means that we get to talk about some horror themed movies and TV shows and this week's theme is really interesting!  So, this is a school themed horror list and I decided to choose 3 horror movies that deal with school!

Alex Browning is among a group of high school students readying themselves for a trip to Europe.  When he suddenly has a premonition their airplane will crash, he screams to warn the others but instead he is thrown off of the plane.

Ever since the first movie in the "Final Destination" franchise came out, I was immediately interested in this franchise!  Just the fact that this franchise is about a group of teenagers being killed off by an unknown force was something that really interested me!

Carrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.
This is definitely one of the most iconic horror school movies of all time!  The fact that it's about a young girl who has telekinetic powers and she ended up using her powers to murder people when pushed too far is definitely something that remained with me to this very day!

3. The Final

I've got a group of kids who a 10 tormented and bullied and a point where they want revenge against the kids of their high school and knowing today and it's going to change both sides of their life.

So, this movie can best be described as "Carrie," except that the bullied kids don't have telekinetic powers, but they still torture their tormentors in the most brutal ways possible!

Thursday Movie Picks #59: Femme Fatale

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Femme Fatale!

Well, this week's theme is pretty interesting!  While I do watch a lot of films that feature strong female characters. I rarely watched films that has a femme fatale, so here are some movies that I considered to be femme fatale!

Oh, and here's a definitely of "femme fatale" for those of you who are curious:

An attractive and seductive woman, especially one who is likely to cause distress or disaster to a man who becomes involved with her.

A young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.

Love this movie!  Anyway, I considered Chris' girlfriend Rose to be a femme fatale as what she does in this movie towards Chris is quite nightmarish and something that really defined femme fatale in the horror movie genre!

An exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.

A movie that I watched years ago and I loved it!  Anyway, there are a lot of femme fatale characters in this movie, but the one character who stood out the most was Rosario Dawson's character as she plays a prostitute who's trying to protect a town from corrupted law enforcements.

3. Batman Returns

While Batman deals with a deformed man calling himself the Penguin wreaking havoc across Gotham with the help of a cruel businessman, a female employee of the latter becomes the Catwoman with her own vendetta.

No, not the Catwoman movie starring Halle Berry, but the Catwoman movie that stars Michelle Pfeiffer.  Catwoman was quite a crazy femme fatale in this movie as she's seen playing games with Batman every chance she got!

Thursday Movie Picks #58: Movies That Confused You

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Movies that Confused You!

Oh my goodness! I love this week's theme!  There are so many movies that I've seen over the years that had confused me; whether it be because of how some aspects of the universe that the characters lived in aren't explained enough or how some physics within that universe works outside of that universe's structure.  Anyway, here are some movies that had confused me when I first watched them.

The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out.

I remembered when I first watched this movie and how confused I was with how the world of the living and the dead are able to coexist with each other, while not knowing each other's existence.  Granted, this movie is still weird to me to this very day, but it's very fun and enjoyable to watch!

An orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts befriends anthropomorphic bugs who live inside a giant peach, and they embark on a journey to New York City.
There were so many things in this movie that confused me so much when I first watched it.  First, there's the fact that a cloud rhino somehow managed to kill the main protagonist's parents, despite it being, you know, a cloud!  Then, there's this one scene where it looks like a mechanical looking shark is attacking the characters and yet, we don't know if that shark was made by somebody or the mechanical look was just a design choice for the movie.  And then, there's the fact that the characters are somehow able to breathe underwater, even though that type of cartoon logic has been around since the Looney Tunes first aired.  So, yeah, lots of things about this movie that really confused me and yet, made this movie pretty creative!

3. Spirited Away

During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.

This right here!  This nightmare of a character (No Face) is the sole reason why this movie confused (and terrified) me when I first watched it!  I didn't understand the basis for his character or what he was trying to bring to the movie.  We weren't given any backstory whatsoever to his character and I just had a hard time trying to understand his character, while being frightened by him at the same time!
