Thursday Movie Picks #56: Natural Disaster

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Natural Disaster!

YAAASSS!  Now we are talking about my favorite movie genre and that's natural disasters!  I love watching movies where the characters are running away from a natural disaster and are trying to survive the disaster.  Those types of films are pretty fun to watch!  So, here are three movies that dealt with natural disasters that I've seen!

Bill and Jo Harding, advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce, must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.

I remembered when this movie first came out and I remembered how awed I was with the special effects of the tornado scenes.  Also, who could forget that scene where Bill and Jo went to their aunt's house to have some steak and mashed potatoes?  Mmmmm...steak and potatoes....yummy!

When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate starts to attack Earth, it's a race against the clock for its creator to uncover the real threat before a worldwide Geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.

Even though the plot of this movie was a bit thin, you have to admit that the storm sequences were awesome and it's one natural disaster film that I definitely don't mind watching over and over again!

3. Armageddon

After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas is going to impact Earth in less than a month, NASA recruits a misfit team of deep-core drillers to save the planet.

You all remembered this movie, right?  The movie where a group of astronauts go to space to stop an asteroid from hitting Earth?  Yeah, I've seen a lot of sci-fi movies where the astronauts try to stop an asteroid from destroying the Earth, but this movie is probably the most iconic out of all of them!

  1. Yup, we match on Geostorm. I like Twister but it's been years since I've seen it.

  3. I saw Twister in the theatre when it came out and while the storyline was a stretch the effects were impressive. The cast certainly gave it their all! COW!

I waited to see Armageddon when it first came out until I could travel down to Washington D.C. and see it at the Uptown Theatre (now sadly closed) where they had a 70 ft. screen. It was still a mind numbingly foolish movie but those special effects POPPED off that screen

I've yet to see Geostorm but it's definitely on my list.

Like you I am a disaster movie junkie! I will watch anything in the genre even if I'm relatively sure it's going to be lousy because sometimes you find gems and other times guilty pleasure. Sometimes though they are just painfully bad. That said I decided this week to find three using the big trifecta of earth, wind and fire where the disaster wasn't the main focus of the plot but once it showed up made a huge impact.

The Colossus of Rhodes (1961)-Soldier Darios (Rory Calhoun) arrives on the Isle of Rhodes during the Hellenistic period to finds King Serse (Roberto Camardiel) has commissioned a larger-than-life statue of Apollo (destined to be one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World) meant to protect the harbor. Upon meeting master builder Carete (Félix Fernández), who has been commissioned to erect the statue Darios falls in love with his daughter Diala (Léa Massari). Through their alliance Darios also becomes involved with Peliocles (Georges Marchal) and his rebel force who seek to overthrow the tyrannical king. As a revolt foments a massive earthquake lays waste to nearly all.

Tornado (1943)-Coal miner Pete Ramsey (Chester Morris) has a whirlwind romance with rapacious showgirl Victory Kane (Nancy Kelly) who is passing through town and impulsively marries her. Social climbing Victory pushes Pete to work his way up in the company to enter a high tax bracket but still unsatisfied takes up with Gary Linden (Morgan Conway), the philandering son of the mine owner behind Pete’s back. As matters come to a crisis point the title tornado blows into town and coal isn’t the only thing to hit the fan.

Red Skies of Montana (1952)-After a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of his crew smokejumper Cliff Mason (Richard Widmark), unable to recall the event, is fearful that cowardice might have been at fault. Though cleared though an investigation he is determined to prove himself again especially since one man's son, Ed Miller (Jeffrey Hunter), suspects Cliff was responsible for his father's death. When a canyon wildfire breaks out Ed pursues Cliff there for a confrontation but when they become trapped Cliff must take desperate measures to save them both.
