Thursday Movie Picks #11: Actors in Multiple Roles

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Actors in Multiple Roles!

I have seen various movies where one actor was playing multiple roles in a movie and I always found those types of movies to be the most interesting since we get to see just how that actor can take on different roles in one movie.  So, here are some movies where the actors were in multiple roles.

Dorothy Gale is swept away from a farm in Kansas to a magical land of Oz in a tornado and embarks on a quest with her new friends to see the Wizard who can help her return home to Kansas and help her friends as well.

I never thought about this movie having actors that played multiple roles.  But I just remembered that the actors Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger and Jack Haley had actually played multiple roles in this movie like the Wizard of Oz, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, Hickory and the Gatekeeper and they were all amazing in those roles!

King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table embark on a surreal, low-budget search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles.

Oh man!  I remembered watching this movie and it was just so hilarious! As usual, the Monty Python crew (Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam) all did fantastic jobs at portraying various roles in this movie!

Identical twins Annie and Hallie, separated at birth and each raised by one of their biological parents, later discover each other for the first time at summer camp and make a plan to bring their wayward parents back together.

I remembered loving this movie when I was little and Lindsay Lohan did a fantastic job at portraying both twins Annie and Hallie to the point where I actually thought that Lindsay Lohan actually had a twin sister in real life!

  1. Even after your post and Brittani's, I still can't recall anybody doubling up in Holy Grail. I gotta go back and check that out (I loved that movie as a kid).

Lindsey Lohan is a good pick! She was awesome back in the day.

  2. The Wizard of Oz is a great choice! It never occurred to me but fits so well. All those actors were wonderful in their dual roles as was Margaret Hamilton as Miss Gulch and The Wicked Witch.

I'm not always in the mood for Monty Python but when I am they are hysterical and this film is one of the best illustrations of that.

This version of Parent Trap was decent but I'll always prefer the Hayley Mills original.

There turned out to be far more choices than I expected so I decided to use three with similar titles that all shared actors doing double duty.

Dead Ringer (1964)-Bette Davis plays identical twin sisters, poor Edith Phillips and wealthy Margaret DeLorca who have been estranged for decades because Margaret married Edith’s boyfriend after stealing him from her. Reunited at the man’s funeral Edith discovers that Margaret manipulated the marriage years before and enraged kills her and takes her place. All seems well until Edith uncovers secrets that may prove fatal.

Dead Ringers (1988)-Jeremy Irons plays Elliot (Jeremy Irons), a successful gynecologist, who works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly (Irons as well). Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly, the meeker of the two, without the woman knowing the difference. Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, Claire (Geneviève Bujold), but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness. Strange, chilly film directed by David Cronenberg goes to several very dark places.

Dead Again (1991)-A mute amnesiac (Emma Thompson) arrives at the gates of an old orphanage and private investigator Mike Church (Kenneth Branagh) is asked to find out who she is. With the help of a hypnotist (Derek Jacobi), the woman regains her voice and recalls vivid past memories of a couple (also played by Emma & Branagh) from the 1940s torn apart by murder. Church begins to develop feelings for the woman, whom he calls Grace then discovers he has a connection to the tragic couple from the 40s. Atmospheric noir shot at the time that the pair were married in real life.

  3. I’m surprised more people didn’t pick The Parent Trap whether it be the sequel or the original which I prefer. Great choice in the Wizard of Oz especially since Frank Morgan played several roles. Love Monty Python and this film is hilarious with the dumb ass Lancelot to the killer rabbit

  4. We match on Monty Python! I used to love The Parent Trap as a kid. I'm one of the few people that dislike Wizard of Oz though. I know, terrible opinion. lol

  5. Nice picks! The Parent Trap is such a fun movie. Lindsay did a great job playing both roles. I hadn't thought of The Wizard of Oz for this theme, but it fits perfectly.

  6. Not gonna lie, as far as acting chops went, Lohan had the most going for her as those Disney teens. So I love The Parent Trap pick.. what a difficult movie to watch now tho. You have a young kid actor who will go on to ruin her life. And you have Natasha as well, who will end up being taken away from us too soon.
