Thursday Movie Picks #32: Movies about Animals

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Movies about Animals!

WOO BOY!  This one is going to be a TOUGHIE because I watched a TON of movies that dealt with animals!  Well, I'll try to narrow it down to three movies as much as I can.  So, here are some movies that I've watched that featured animals.

The Lion King (1994) Drinking Game - Drink When

A Lion cub crown prince is tricked by a treacherous uncle into thinking he caused his father's death and flees into exile in despair, only to learn in adulthood his identity and his responsibilities.

Of course I picked the most obvious movie! "The Lion King" has remained to be one of my most favorite movies of all-time and it still resonates with me to this very day!  This is definitely one movie that I continue to watch to this day!

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

Oh my gosh! I never would have thought that I would come across a Disney film that actually tackled the subject of racism and handled it in a graceful way!  This movie was a lot of fun and it's definitely a movie I'm looking forward to re-watching again!

The story of the legendary outlaw is portrayed with the characters as humanoid animals.

Good lord!  I used to watch this movie all the time when I was little and I always loved the cute little bantering between the characters and the animation was amazing!  Definitely one movie I'm looking forward to re-watching again!

EXTRA MOVIE:

4. The Great Mouse Detective

Basil, the rodent Sherlock Holmes, investigates the kidnapping of a toy maker and uncovers its link to his archenemy, Professor Ratigan.

Wow! Another animated Disney film that features talking animals?  You got to admit that Disney created some of the best animated films that dealt with animals!  Anyway, I just had to add this movie onto the list because it's vastly underrated and I just loved how it took the Sherlock Holmes lore and turned it into it's own movie!  More people should definitely check this film out!

  1. Animation is not my bag but I do have quite a bit of affection for this version of Robin Hood. It will never replace the Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland version but its a charming little film.

I also remember getting a kick out of The Great Mouse Detective though its been years since I've seen it.

I'm sure I've seen all of Lion King in bits from passing through the room when my nieces and nephews were watching it but I've never sat and watched the whole thing.

I've seen even less of Zootopia.

Two of mine deal with lions as well though real ones and in very different ways.

Rascal (1969)-Near the turn of the last century in a small Wisconsin town young Sterling North (Bill Mumy) adopts a baby raccoon-Rascal and spends most of that summer trying to keep him out of trouble while his widowed traveling salesman father Willard (Steve Forrest) is away on business. Disney produced reverie based on the autobiographical book by North.

Born Free (1966)-In a Kenyan game preserve wardens Joy and George Adamson (played by real life marrieds British performers Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers) discover three young cubs whose mother has been shot by poachers. They care for the three at the reserve until the two larger cubs are sent to a zoo, but both develop a special kinship with Elsa, the runt of the litter. Being of a gentle disposition they at first keep her as a pet but when the prospect of George’s reassignment and the threat of having to send Elsa to a zoo arises the couple decide that since she was born free they have to reintegrate her into the wild. Based on a true story.

Black Zoo (1963)-At the private zoo “Conrad’s Animal Kingdom” warped owner Michael Conrad (Michael Gough) is up to no good. He rules over a cult of animal worshippers whose fealty is only to the four footed beasts and when anyone poses a threat to their society Conrad has trained the animals to dispatch them in gruesome ways.

  2. We match on Zootopia and Robin Hood! I love all four of your picks. I recently just rewatched The Great Mouse Detective on Disney+. I still enjoy it.

  3. Zootopia is a good movie and the sloth scene makes me laugh because it’s so true especially their profession. I have to see Robin Hood which is a classic. The Lion King is another good film and love the songs

  4. I love The Lion King when I first saw it. Haven't seen it since and the "live action" remake is on my to-watch list.
I've seen Zootopia too but it wasn't that memorable for me.

    1. I'm debating about whether or not I should watch the live action remake. I've been hearing some bad things about it.
