Thursday Movie Picks #40: Horror Movie Houses

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: Horror Movie Houses!

HAPPY OCTOBER EVERYBODY!  This is a fantastic theme for the start of October!  There's been a lot of houses in horror movies that I really liked and I would like to list three houses from horror movies that are my favorites!

1. The Maitlands' House from "Beetlejuice"

Sure, this isn't how the Maitlands' house looked like when it was first introduced into the movie.  But I was impressed by what the Deetzes did with the house and I just loved how bizarre the Maitlands' house looked after they redesigned it!

2. Monster House

"Monster House" was an okay movie for me.  But the titular monster house was seriously scary to look at and I just loved the fact that this house has teeth and the windows makes its eyes!  Certainly makes for a great haunted house!

3. The House from "The Conjuring"

Now, I haven't seen the Conjuring movies yet, but this house definitely looks so creepy!  Especially with the hanging noose that's in the tree nearby!

  1. We have a match!

I also went with Monster House. I love the house and the movie. Beetlejuice is a great pick & The Conjuring is definitely worth your time.

  2. The Conjuring works so well here but I'm keeping the franchise for another week this month. :D

  3. I like that you went with a literal interpretation for this and highlighted the houses in the movies.

The only one I've seen is Beetlejuice, a crazy wacky movie with great performances especially Michael Keaton's. Neither of the other two appealed to me but you're right that the noose adds a definite ominous touch to the house in The Conjuring.

I'm not much for horror so this month is going to take some digging for me to come up with picks which is what I did to come up with the three for this week.

The Haunting (1963)-Dr. John Markway (Richard Johnson) is doing research into psychic phenomena. In the service of that study he invites two women-lonely, eccentric Eleanor (Julie Harris) who has experienced supernatural events previously and brash Theodora (Claire Bloom) who is gifted with ESP. On arrival they are joined by the mansion's heir, cynical Luke (Russ Tamblyn) and are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events. Soon Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her. Loaded with atmosphere and extremely well-acted.

You’ll Find Out (1940)-Debutante Janis Bellacrest (Helen Parrish) books Kay Kyser and his big band, the Kollege of Musical Knowledge including singer Ginny Simms and cornet playing sidekick Ish Kabibble to play at her 21st birthday party at a remote spooky mansion. Between performances, Kay finds Janis’s guests-quirky Aunt Margo (Alma Kruger), pretentious professor Fenniger (Peter Lorre), creepy Prince Soliano (Bela Lugosi) and irritable Judge Mainwaring (Boris Karloff) on the bizarre side and begins to suspect that Janis is in danger. When a powerful storm blows in and strands everyone overnight events both scary and wacky transpire. Goofy musical comic/thriller is the only onscreen pairing of Lorre, Karloff and Lugosi.

Seven Footprints of Satan (1929)-When mayhem breaks out at her father’s party Eve (Thelma Todd) and her fiancée Jim (Creighton Hale) jump into a limousine and think they are safely away from danger. Shortly afterwards though they find themselves at the house of “Satan” who may or may not be a criminal mastermind, a supernatural fiend, the devil himself, or some combination of all those things. As they make their way through odd rooms they encounter an imp, a dwarf, an ape-like man, a gorilla, Satan’s Mistress and “the Spider”. Finally they are tested with the Seven Footprints which could lead to fabulous wealth and freedom or servitude to Satan…and maybe Death! Originally released in both silent and partial sound versions only the silent one (long thought lost as well) survives.

  4. Monster House is such a good pick this week! I remember my brother used to love it even as a kid but it always freaked me out.

  5. Great picks! You definitely need to watch The Conjuring movies (at least the first 2, I've never bothered with the spin offs) I finally did last year after Sati spoke so highly of them and they did not disappoint.
