Thursday Movie Picks #48: 2020 Releases

Hey! Welcome to Thursday Movie Picks where you get to share your movie picks for each topic presented every Thursday!  Based on the theme presented each week, you can pick up to 3 to 5 movies and explain why you picked those movies! This meme is being hosted by Wandering through the Shelves!

This week's theme is: 2020 Releases!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!  I hope the year started out well for you guys!  I was actually hoping that we had a theme that dealt with movies from 2020 as I watched a lot of films from 2020 and many of them had surprised me!  So, here's my list of movies in 2020 that actually surprised me in a pleasant way!

After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

When I first heard about this movie, I will admit that I was a bit hesitant about this movie because of the "R" rating, despite the fact that Harley Quinn is one of my all-time favorite DC villains.  Also, this movie came out after "Suicide Squad," which was a pretty controversial movie on its own.  But, after watching this movie, I found myself really enjoying this movie and I think that Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn was truly fantastic!

The story of 7 people on trial stemming from various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

When I first heard about this movie, I will admit that I wasn't that interested in the movie at first because it was about a courtroom drama and I rarely watch movies that deal with courtroom procedures. But this movie amazed me with the very well written characters and the intense situations surrounding the characters that this quickly became my all-time favorite movie of 2020!

After discovering a small, blue, fast hedgehog, a small-town police officer must help him defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on him.

Another movie I was on the fence about when I first heard about it.  Despite the fact that I'm a huge "Sonic the Hedgehog" fan, after they released the very first trailer (the one with "ugly" Sonic), I was so taken aback by the whole thing.  But, I was really surprised that they decided to redesign the character and it turned out to be the best thing for this movie!  But, not only was the redesign a vast improvement for the character, but the movie turned out to be really good story wise!  I just loved the more emotional take they had on Sonic's character and I actually felt for him whenever his loneliness got to him.  This movie made me so excited to see the sequel, especially when two of my all-time favorite characters from the franchise will be appearing in the sequel!  Oh and don't forget Jim Carrey's performance as Dr. Robotnik!  He was probably one of the best parts of the movie!

  1. I love Birds of Prey and that's definitely one of the biggest pleasant surprise for me as well. It took me a while to see it after its release, but I'm glad I saw it before the year was over, it made it to my Top 10 list of 2020.

    1. Same here! I didn't watch the movie in theaters like I wanted to. But at least I watched it before the end of the year!

  2. I loved Birds of Prey. It's one of the most unique superhero/comic book movies right now. I haven't seen the other two, but Sonic the Hedgehog looks like fun. Nice picks!

  3. I haven't seen any of these, though I've heard of all three.

The one I'm most anxious to see is The Trial of the Chicago 7. I've only heard good things about it and I have vague memories of the actual events from when I was a very young kid.

I saw alot of films last year but it turns out only three of those came out in 2020 which made compiling a list very easy.

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears-Fabulously wealthy and endlessly chic 20’s Aussie detective and adventuress Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) globetrots to unravel an ancient curse involving priceless emeralds aided by stalwart and smitten Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page). Big screen continuation of the highly entertaining Phryne Fisher Mysteries TV series from Australia.

Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind-Through interviews with family (including her two daughters) and friends the life and tragic mysterious death of megastar Natalie Wood is examined.

The Invisible Man-Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) attempts to escape from the virtual imprisonment of her marriage to an ultra-wealthy, brilliant and psychotic husband Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). While trying to rebuild her life she discovers he has devised a way to mask himself to the point of invisibility as he terrorizes her. Okay thriller sustains its suspense until an ending that betrays both of its main characters.

    2. Yay! Another Miss Fisher fan!!

Love the whole show and all the characters but it's really the women, Dot, Aunt Prudence and Phyrne of course, that really punch it across. Though I do love the imperturbability of Mr. Butler! Fantastic production and costume design. I discovered it first and showed it to my one niece and she did a marathon of the entire series and then had got her sister hooked, who likewise told one of her friends about it and on and on. The movie was all set to be released theatrically in April but the pandemic put the kibosh on that and it was shown on the Acorn network as a special event. Hopefully there will be another follow-up once we wade our way out of this mess.

    3. Cool! I got introduced to the series when it was showing on PBS and since then, I've been hooked to the series! Too bad it's on Acorn TV because I have to pay to get Acorn TV.

  5. Birds of Prey is one of my favourite of the year. As for Trial of the Chicago 7, I had low expectations because I had read bad reviews but I checked it out anyway because of Sorkin and because I'm a sucker for courtroom dramas and I liked it a lot.

  6. I'm a big fan of Birds of Prey and The Trial of the Chicago 7. I wasn't so big on Sonic the Hedgehog, but it was certainly not as bad as I feared so I'll still consider it a win.
